Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), includes symptoms of inattention, lack of focus, difficulty following through on tasks, forgetfulness, and problems with organization skills (planning, time management, delay of gratification). Additionally, children with ADHD have difficulty sitting still, frequently fidget and move around, talk excessively and interrupt others, and have a hard time waiting their turn or following the normal rules of social engagement. ADHD includes three subtypes; Predominantly Inattentive, Predominantly Hyperactive, and Combined Presentation. Each of these three conditions can significantly impair a child’s ability to learn and retain information to achieve desired grade-level results in reading, writing, and arithmetic. In fact, learning disorders and other behavioral problems are often co-occurring with ADHD.

Fortunately, excellent assessment and treatment options exist for children who may be struggling with ADHD. If left untreated, the symptoms of ADHD can become a difficult interference for learning and retaining information. Many children (and adults) with symptoms of ADHD find it very hard to pay attention and remember things, making it hard to complete tasks and follow through on important duties. In addition to behavioral focusing techniques, a combined treatment approach of medication management and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a great strategy for helping children with ADHD excel and function effectively in both academic and social environments. With a combination of therapeutic support and improved behavior management at home and school, each child can overcome these challenges and thrive in everything they do.
